Words From A Mother

When I became a mom the 2nd time, I became aware of my son’s speech delays and he was exhibiting characteristics of autism. I felt completely unprepared for the journey of our “new normal”. We have been very fortunate to have received support and resources within our community when our son was very young, and now that he has progressed into adulthood his needs have changed, we are extremely grateful for Love Beyond Autism organization for embracing our young adults and creating a socialization platform for persons of varying abilities to meet and socialize with new people and form lasting friendships.

Unstoppable

Robert J. Smith’s
Triumph with Autism

Meet Robert J. Smith, a remarkable young man who, at the age of 24, has defied all odds and emerged victorious in his first Muay Thai competition on October 1, 2023. Robert was diagnosed with autism at the tender age of 2, and his journey to this triumph has been nothing short of inspiring.
Raising a child with autism, especially without prior knowledge of the condition, presented numerous challenges. Early on, Robert struggled to make friends, often keeping to himself as others failed to understand him. However, with unwavering determination and relentless effort, both Robert and his devoted family embarked on this challenging journey together.
From a young age, Robert displayed a fearless spirit, fearlessly jumping off beds, swings, and curves, causing anxiety for those who cared for him. His determination only grew stronger as he matured. I recall one instance where he sustained a hairline tear in his finger while playing basketball, yet he didn’t reveal it until after the game, demonstrating his sheer determination.
Robert’s passions extend beyond Muay Thai; he’s deeply devoted to Taekwondo, Jujitsu, Boxing, and even self-taught himself to play the piano and guitar. His fascination with martial arts began when his uncle, Joseph Williams, introduced him to karate at the tender age of 5 or 6, and he has since honed his skills relentlessly.

On the morning of his pivotal fight on October 1, 2023, nerves were palpable. Weigh-ins at 8:30 AM, followed by rules and practice, made for a long and tense day. However, when the moment arrived, Robert faced the challenge head-on, and the fight was over in a flash.
Much credit goes to the dedicated coaches at Black house MMA, who have worked tirelessly to help Robert reach his full potential.
Robert’s story is a testament to the indomitable human spirit. His journey, despite being on the autism spectrum, showcases his exceptional abilities, akin to those of any neurotypical individual. Despite his busy life, Robert even finds time to drive the company van for Love Beyond Autism, picking up friends and clients for events.
From struggling with the simplest tasks, like tying his shoes, to winning belts and titles, Robert’s journey has been nothing short of extraordinary. There is something truly special about children on the autism spectrum; we must provide them with the space and support to be themselves.
This story is meant to inspire parents who have children on the spectrum and may be facing difficulties. Seek help, ask questions, and join support groups; there is nothing that your child cannot achieve. Robert’s story serves as a testament to this fact – he is truly unstoppable.
With determination, passion, and support, individuals with autism can conquer their challenges and achieve greatness. Robert J. Smith’s journey is a shining example of this truth.

I’m thrilled to share a personal story

that has become an integral part of Love Beyond Autism. This story revolves around a remarkable individual, Bob, who recently marked his 80th birthday. Yes, you read that correctly – 80 years young, and his daily inspiration continues to uplift me. He goes to work 6 days a week 8 hours a day. When I see him, I just think what a blessing.
In my role as the founder of Love Beyond Autism, I’ve had the privilege of encountering extraordinary individuals, and Bob stands out as one of the most remarkable. With a successful business spanning over 35 years, he graciously imparts his wisdom not only on matters pertaining to Love Beyond Autism but also on personal and business affairs.
Our story extends far beyond the professional landscape into the realms of camaraderie and shared moments. Bob and I often find ourselves sitting down for a drink of his homemade kombucha tea. Now, in the spirit of full disclosure, the aroma isn’t precisely my cup of tea (laugh out loud), but these shared moments over tea have become cherished and symbolic of our deepening friendship.
Bob, more than a successful business owner, is a living embodiment of the richness that comes with age and the kindness that defines genuine friendship. His presence adds a unique and invaluable spirit to Love Beyond Autism.
Let’s take a moment to celebrate the seniors in our lives. They are not only carriers of history but also vessels of profound insight. My deepest gratitude goes out to Bob, whose presence has added an extra layer of warmth and wisdom to me.
Here’s to celebrating wisdom, fostering friendships, and the incredible journey we’re on together.

Our son Andrew
Mathews

“Society seems fixated with the idea of labels in that everything and everyone has to fall within the boundaries of a category. We feel certain labels can make people feel inclined to stay within the confinements of said limitations. But there are always those individuals who surpass the boundaries of their given labels and grow to adopt whichever labels they choose.

Our son Andrew Mathews is one of those individuals. He is hard working and determined, curious and intuitive, as well as helpful and kind. A cheerful and entertaining young man whose laugh and singing can be heard clear across the room, to our occasional dismay. He holds no judgements or biases, no ill will or discontent. His involvement in talent shows art exhibits, fencing classes, volunteering in multiple events and near perfect attendance at Mychal’s’ Learning Place Adult program shows that he is dedicated and committed.

His constant willingness to put himself outside his comfort zone and try new experiences makes him better than us for sure. He is always excited to participate – no matter the activity. As his parents we would have to say his best quality is his ability to accept others as they are. We have watched him grow, improve, and mature over the years and I can honestly say I wouldn’t wish for a better son.

Andrew has unlimited possibilities that he can choose to pursue as everyone else does; his consistency and resilience assures us he will.

Here’s Anthony
Story

In the vibrant tapestry of life, Anthony story unfolds like a canvas painted in shades of blue—the color that mirrors the depth and warmth within his heart. At 24, Anthony is a young man navigating the world with the support of his loving parents and the guidance of Mychal’s Learning Place, a haven where the tools of life are not just taught but experienced.

Anthony’s journey at Mychal’s Learning Place is more than a curriculum; it’s an odyssey into the ordinary, a chance to learn life’s navigation skills through grocery shopping and explorations of the world beyond textbooks. The joy he finds in this learning space is evident in the sparkle of his eyes and the genuine smiles that grace his face.
The foundation of Anthony’s world is built on the love and warmth his parents envelop him in. Their bond is a sanctuary of acceptance, and the time spent together, especially during his mother’s absence, is treasured—filled with chilling moments and shared cooking adventures that leave the kitchen resonating with laughter.

Within his family, Anthony finds joy in the company of two remarkable grandmothers, Grandma Carolyn and Grandma Alice, weaving traditions and stories that become the threads of his identity. These moments become cherished fragments of his narrative, adding depth to the beautiful mosaic of his life.
Anthony, with dreams as vivid as the October skies under which he was born, has two ambitions etched on his list—to learn the art of driving and to become a chef. His ambition to master the culinary arts is a shared passion with his father, creating not just meals but memories that linger long after the plates are empty.

Family extends beyond parents, and in Anthony’s case, it includes an older brother, Deandre, and two nephews who hold a special place in his heart. Their presence brings an added layer of love and belonging, turning ordinary moments into extraordinary family bonds.

In the realm of relationships, Anthony expresses a simple desire—a connection with girls who embody fun, pleasant scents, and understanding companionship. His perspective on friendships is measured, valuing quality over quantity—a reflection of his discerning approach to life.

Crenshaw Christian Center is a spiritual anchor, where Anthony delves into the teachings of the Bible, finding solace and wisdom to navigate life’s challenges. His faith, like the color blue, is a calming force that permeates his world.
Tacos, a favorite culinary delight, symbolize the zest Anthony brings to his life. Whether indulging in a game of basketball, conquering the lanes in bowling, or exploring new restaurants with his parents, he embraces life with a contagious enthusiasm.
As Anthony envisions a future beyond the familiar, he dreams of moving into a community tailored to his needs—a space where he can continue his adventure, perhaps working at the café in Mychal’s, merging passion with purpose.
His story is one of warmth, heartfelt connections, and an unwavering spirit. Through his words and actions, Anthony invites others into his world, where every day is an opportunity to learn, love, and savor the flavors of life.
In the heart of his narrative lies a desire for financial growth, a wish not to alter the past but to shape a future where dreams can flourish. Anthony, the curator of his own story, keeps a digital chronicle alive, a website that breathes life into his experiences and welcomes new friends into the embrace of his world.
As the calendar approaches December, Anthony eagerly anticipates the joy of decorating a new Christmas tree—a symbol of tradition, love, and the promise of new beginnings. In this season of celebration, he stands on the threshold of countless possibilities, a young man with dreams as vast as the October sky, ready to paint his canvas with the hues of his aspirations.
